Why page speed decides whether visitors stay

Stopwatch and page load time bars

You can spend weeks perfecting a homepage and still lose most of your visitors before they see it. On mobile — which is how most people in Nigeria browse — a slow page is often the difference between an enquiry and a bounce.

What the research says

Google’s own research found that as a page’s load time goes from one second to three seconds, the probability of a visitor leaving rises by 32%. Stretch that to five seconds and it nearly doubles.

Speed also feeds into how Google ranks you. Its Core Web Vitals measure how quickly the main content appears, how fast the page reacts when someone taps, and whether things jump around while loading. The short video below from Google’s Chrome team explains them well.

The usual culprits

  • Huge images. A photo straight from a phone can be 5 MB. Resized and converted to WebP, the same image is often under 150 KB.
  • Too many plugins. Every slider, pop-up and widget adds scripts. Many sites load code for features nobody uses.
  • Cheap, overloaded hosting. If the server takes two seconds to respond, nothing else can be fast.
  • No caching. Without it, the server rebuilds every page for every visitor.
  • Heavy fonts and embeds. Several font families and auto-playing videos add up quickly.

A quick speed checklist

  1. Run your homepage through PageSpeed Insights and note the mobile score.
  2. Compress and resize images before uploading them.
  3. Remove plugins you do not actively use.
  4. Turn on a caching plugin, or ask your host about server caching.
  5. Use one or two font families and host them yourself.
  6. Re-test after each change so you know what helped.
