Brand identity basics for growing Nigerian businesses

Colour palette and typography

When customers decide whether to trust a business they have never used, they judge it in seconds — usually by how it looks. A consistent brand says “we are organised and here to stay”. An inconsistent one raises doubts, even if your service is excellent.

The five building blocks

1. Logo and its variations

You need more than one file. A full logo for your website header, a compact mark for social profiles and favicons, and versions that work on dark backgrounds and in one colour for printing or embroidery.

2. Colour palette

Pick one primary colour people will associate with you, a supporting colour, a neutral for text and a background tone. Write down the exact codes so every designer and printer uses the same shades.

3. Typefaces

Two typefaces are usually enough: one with personality for headings and one that is easy to read for everything else. Make sure they are licensed for commercial use and available for the web.

4. Imagery style

Decide whether you use real photography, illustrations or both — and the mood: bright and friendly, or dark and premium. Stock photos chosen at random are the fastest way to look generic.

5. Tone of voice

How do you sound? Formal or relaxed? Pidgin on social media, or always standard English? Writing a few dos and don’ts keeps everyone consistent.

Put it in a brand guide

A simple 10 to 20 page brand guide brings all of this together. Hand it to every designer, printer and new staff member, and your brand stays consistent as you grow.

Tip: before you print 5,000 flyers, print one and look at it in daylight. Colours on screen and on paper are never quite the same.
